The Wine Experience
Left and Right
in Bordeaux
Do
you know your left from your right?
No,
we’re not talking politics or ballplayers. Actually,
in wine left or right means Bordeaux. You
see the Gironde estuary divides the region into two pretty unique
wine areas. On the Left Bank of the river are the gravelly
soils of the Médoc and Haut Médoc and the famous
villages of Pauillac, St Estephe, Saint Julien and Margaux.
Here
Cabernet Sauvignon rules, giving us the intense, tannic and age
worthy wines Bordeaux is most famous for.
On
the Right Bank are the clay and sand soils and the higher elevations
of St Emilion and Pomerol… which produce world renowned,
luscious Merlots. These usually tend to be more approachable
and ready to drink when younger than the Cabernet of the Left
Bank because they’re less tannic...Bordeaux
is a many faceted region and pretty complex to learn about…
but
your starting point should be simply knowing your left from your
right!
