Some things about the wine world
seem locked in a time warp. That's how a lot of folks think
of the famous classified growth system of Bordeaux.
About 150 years ago, 1855 to be exact,
the wine merchants of Bordeaux created a class system that still
exists. They ranked the top 61 wines by price. assuming that
meant quality . . . and put them in five groups called growths
or crus. And probably the most amazing thing is that these
classifications have only been changed once since 1855 to
move a single wine into a higher class.
The five
first growth classed wines are among the worlds priciest, and
many critics say, best wines. Sure all that tradition has to
mean something. but a class level or critic's rating are simply
starting points and can't tell you what to like.

the union of the local wine growers drew up a Classification
of St-Émilion. This classification was founded on soil,
wine tasting, and vineyards' reputations
